Congratulations on your engagement lovely! While researching wedding dresses you may have discovered just how many different styles, fabrics and accessories there are to pick from. For a fantastic overview of all the terminology you’re likely to come across then head to our useful glossary of bridal terminology.
One fabric you will see across all the best designers is crepe. This luxurious material makes for the very best wedding dresses, for a more detailed dive into crepe fabric read on.
What is crepe fabric?
Crepe fabric is easily recognised for its gorgeous woven texture, which is achieved through weaving or treatment of the fabric. Crepe fabric can be light and thin or luxuriously heavy, either way this versatile textured fabric is ideal for contemporary and minimalist wedding gowns.
Due to the unique texture of crepe, dresses made of this beautiful fabric don’t have to be embellished if the bride would prefer a classic and understated gown. However, the simplicity of this material also suits beading, lace work or other delicate details.
What are the different types of crepe?
As crepe can refer to a multitude of fabrics it could be confusing. The main difference is that there is thin or thick crepe. Thin crepe is usually lightweight, fine fabric that has a nice drape and lends itself more to slip style gowns or skirts. Whereas, thick crepe is often a smoother texture, with an elastic and comfortable stretch to the fabric.
One of the main crepe fabrics used in wedding dresses is ‘Crepe Georgette’, this material is silky and thin and also used in evening wear. The other common crepe fabric used in the creation of wedding gowns is ‘Heavy Stretch Crepe’ which is a more structured and flattering material used mostly in figure hugging wedding silhouettes.
Why do we love a crepe wedding dress at Hannah Elizabeth Bridal?
There are so many reasons to love a crepe wedding dress, it is hard to pick just a few. Firstly, crepe is visually stunning, with a bright and textured finish it is the perfect fabric for brides looking for a modern minimalist gown. Despite being a top choice for minimalist gowns, crepe is also a fantastic choice to be used with embellishments such as lace, illusion or beading.
Crepe fabric is also very comfortable and breathable, making it the ideal choice for summer weddings and for dancing until the very last guest departs. This cosy fabric is also incredibly flattering, especially when used in formfitting and figure hugging designs.
What should you consider when picking a crepe wedding dress?
When deciding on a crepe wedding gown there are a few considerations to keep in mind. For example, if you have you heart set on a mermaid or sheath silhouette then a heavy crepe will work beautifully with this style of wedding dress. However, if you are dreaming of a A-line or ballgown dress, then a lighter crepe will work best, giving you a softer and more fluid look.
Depending on the materials used in the crepe fabric, some crepe fabrics may show underwear so you will want to opt for a heavy crepe to avoid this or purchase some seamless underwear or shape-wear.
How should you look after a crepe wedding dress?
Crepe is a very low maintenance material which is one of the many reasons we love this fabric for wedding dresses. However, should you find a crease ahead of your wedding day there are a few techniques you can try. Please ensure you check the care label on your gown before trying any of these tips.
Cotton or synthetic crepe can be ironed on a low heat, but do not try this with silk. Alternatively, you can use a hand-held steamer or hang your wedding dress in a steamy bathroom. At Hannah Elizabeth Bridal, your dress will be steamed prior to your dress collection appointment. We offer an additional pre-wedding steaming service of your gown, post-alterations, should you wish the cost is a reduced cost of £40.00 for all of our HEB Lovelies.
Once you are happy with your crepe wedding dress, ensure you vertically hang your dress to ensure your dress dries fully preventing new wrinkles, and keep your dress hung until the wedding to prevent any further creasing.
